[인터뷰] 올가 베귄 샌프란시스코 식물원 원예가

샌프란시스코 식물원은 샌프란시스코의 최대 공원인 골든게이트 파크 내 남동쪽에 자리하고 있다. 식물원만으로도 55ac(22.3ha)에 이르는 큰 규모로, 모체인 골든게이트 파크(1017ac, 412ha)는 센트럴파크(840ac, 340ha)보다 20%정도 넓은 면적을 차지하고 있다. 총 8500종이 넘는 식물들을 보유하고 있으며, 호주, 칠레, 뉴질랜드, 동남아 등 세계 각지의 식물들을 지역별로 전시 수집하여, 구역별로 배정된 소속 원예가들이 관리하고 있다.

처음의 방문 목적은 자원봉사를 빙자한 자생식물관찰이었지만, 다른 도시에서 만나기 힘든 새로운 커뮤니티를 만나게 되어 이렇게 소개하고자 한다. 재능기부를 빙자한 무료 노동이 뜨거운 감자로 떠오른 시점에 작은 울림이 되길 바라며, 이 글은 모두 인터뷰로만 구성하였다. 구어체로 번역하여 일부 원예가와 정원가, 정원과 식물원의 혼용을 양해 바란다.

EJ: 자기소개 부탁드립니다.

Please introduce yourself.

OB: 저는 샌프란시스코 식물원의 원예가입니다. 동남아시아 구름 숲 정원과 선인장 정원을 담당하고 있습니다.

I’m a horticulturalist here at San Francisco Botanical Garden. I’m in charge of an area that includes South East Asian Cloud forest collection and the Succulent garden collection

EJ: 일하신지 얼마나 되셨나요?

How long have you worked here?

OB: 여기서 지난 8월부터 일했습니다. 거의 일 년쯤 되었네요. 매우 만족 중입니다.

I’ve worked here since last August. It’s almost one year. I love it so far.

EJ: 이곳에서의 일과는 어떤가요.

Let me share your daily routine in here.

OB: 규칙적으로 하는 일은 식물에 물주기 입니다. 모든 지역이 자동 급수되진 않거든요. 어떤 지역은 저희가 직접 가서 스프링클러를 설치하고 꺼야 해요. 가장 중요한 일이죠. 또한 식물 관리를 맡고 있는데요, 식물원이기 때문에 계속 보존여부를 기록해야 해요. 컬렉션을 관리하는데, 모든 식물들은 고유번호가 있어서 저희가 식재하면서 계속 추적을 하고 있어요. 하나가 죽으면, 데이터베이스에 업데이트를 하는 식이죠. 물론 원예의 미적인 측면도 있어서, 저희가 텃밭을 관리하고 산책로를 정비하구요. 잡초 뽑기, 잔디 깎기, 청소하기 등의 일도 하죠. 봉사활동가들이 도움을 주셔서, 제 업무 중의 하나가 그들을 관리하는 리더 역할이에요. 유지관리일과 정원 개선하는 제 역할을 많이 분담해주죠.

Something that is very regular is to water the plant. Because not every area is covered by the automatic watering. Some of the areas we have to go and install sprinklers personally go and stop them. That’s an important task. Also I have to take care of the plants, since we’re at Botanical Garden, I have to participate in conservation by keeping in track. Taking care of the collections, plants all have an Identification that we need to keep track of, when we plant them. If one of them die, then we need to update the database. There’s also aesthetic aspect of the horticulture, we need to keep the beds and the path and general area. Weeding, mowing, sweeping etc. Then we have volunteer help, my task sometimes to lead the group of volunteer. That helps me to complete my tasks of maintenance and improvement of botanical garden.

EJ: 봉사활동가들은 어떤가요?

How do you like the volunteers?

OB: 정말 훌륭한 봉사자들이에요. 보통은 이런 일이나 식물에 관심이 있어서 오시니까, 같이 일하기 수월하고 즐거워하시는 것 같아요. 그린팀처럼 정기적으로 오는 분들은 점점 숙련되어가고, 뭘 해야 할지 이미 알고 오세요. 봉사활동가들과는 정말 잘 지내요.

We have excellent volunteers I think. They are usually coming here because they are interested in that kind of activity or interest in plants, so they are very enthusiastic and easy to work with. Like the regular volunteers like green team, they become quite skilled, they know what to do. It’s an excellent experience with the volunteers.

EJ: 웹사이트를 보니, 좀 더 진지하게 봉사활동 하시는 분들도 보이던데요.

There can be more of in-depth volunteer as I saw in the website.

OB: 어떤 분들은 정원가의 보조로서 일하시기도 해요. 보통은 한 명의 정원가와 함께 일하는데, 그런 분들은 더 이상 봉사활동 그룹과 함께 일하지 않아요. 그런 분들은 좀 더 자발적으로 일할 수 있고 한 지역에 관해서 잘 알게 되요. 여기에 인턴십 기회도 있어서, 그런식으로 합류하기도 하고요.

Some volunteers can be a gardeners’ assistance. They work usually with one gardener and they are not in the volunteer group any more. They get to be more by themselves and they get to know one area very well. We also have a lot of internship opportunities, so there’s a way to get more involved.

EJ: 인턴들도 봉사자들이 하는 일을 하나요, 아니면 봉사자들을 관리하는 역할을 맡나요?

Are those interns also work like volunteers would do? Or more of supervising volunteers?

OB: 인턴십의 종류가 다양하게 있어요. 어떤 인턴들은 정말 식물에 관한 일만 하기도 하구요, 어떤 분들은 봉사자들을 관리하고 같이 일하는 일을 하기도 합니다. 여기서 미셸이 한 일처럼요.

We have different types of internship. Some interns really work with the plants. Some interns work with the volunteers and help us organized with the volunteers, exactly like Michel does.

EJ: 봉사활동가들의 도움을 많이 받으시나요?

Do you get help from volunteers?

OB: 그럼요, 정말 큰 힘이죠. 저희 일은 시간이 많이 필요한 작업이라서, 혼자 일하는 것 보단 6-8명의 사람들이 함께 일하면 훨씬 효율적이에요.

Yes, they are really helpful. Our tasks are time consuming, of course it’s more efficient when we have group of 6 or 8 people, instead of just by the gardener himself.

EJ: 봉사활동 참여자들의 수는 들쭉날쭉 한 편인가요? 이런 면에서 어려운 점은 없는지요.

Is there any fluctuation in how many people attend in the volunteer session? Do you have any hard time with that?

OB: 어떤 때는 평소보다 많은 분들이 오시긴 해요. 예를 들면 토요일엔 정말 많은 분들이 오세요.

We observe that in some days in a week are more popular than others, for instance very often there’s more volunteers on the Saturdays.

EJ: 개선할 점은 없을까요?

Is there anything that you’re expecting for improvement?

OB: 지금 상태로도 좋은 것 같아요. 코디네이터로 클로이가 이 모든 조직을 유연하게 해주거든요. 정말 대단한 분이에요. 괄목할 개선을 보여주고 있고 늘 좋은 아이디어를 내요.

I think it’s great now. We have volunteer coordinator Chloe, making the organization very fluid. She is amazing. She made some improvement and she had some great ideas.
