[인터뷰] 샌프란시스코 식물원 자원봉사자들

샌프란시스코 식물원은 샌프란시스코의 최대 공원인 골든게이트 파크 내 남동쪽에 자리하고 있다. 식물원만으로도 55ac(22.3ha)에 이르는 큰 규모로, 모체인 골든게이트 파크(1017ac, 412ha)는 센트럴파크(840ac, 340ha)보다 20%정도 넓은 면적을 차지하고 있다. 총 8500종이 넘는 식물들을 보유하고 있으며, 호주, 칠레, 뉴질랜드, 동남아 등 세계 각지의 식물들을 지역별로 전시 수집하여, 구역별로 배정된 소속 원예가들이 관리하고 있다.

처음의 방문 목적은 자원봉사를 빙자한 자생식물관찰이었지만, 다른 도시에서 만나기 힘든 새로운 커뮤니티를 만나게 되어 이렇게 소개하고자 한다. 재능기부를 빙자한 무료 노동이 뜨거운 감자로 떠오른 시점에 작은 울림이 되길 바라며, 이 글은 모두 인터뷰로만 구성하였다. 구어체로 번역하여 일부 원예가와 정원가, 정원과 식물원의 혼용을 양해 바란다.

EJ: 본인소개를 부탁드립니다.

Please introduce yourself.

JW: 저는 짐.W라고 합니다. 은퇴한 교수입니다.

I am Jim W, a retired professor.

EJ: 이곳은 어떻게 오시게 되었나요?

How did you find this?

JW: 저는 평생 샌프란시스코에 살았어요. 우연한 일이었죠. 어느 날 지나가다가 들어왔는데, 이곳에 푹 빠졌어요. 봉사활동에 관해 물어보았더니 클로이를 소개해주더군요. 그래서 이렇게 되었습니다. 좋은 사람들을 만났어요.

I’ve lived in San Francisco for my entire life. It was like an accident. One day I just wandered in, and I fell in love with the place. I asked about volunteer, then they sent me to Chloe, here I am. It’s easy. (I met) Very nice people.

EJ: 원래 정원 일에 관심이 있으셨나요?

Have you had any previous interest about gardening?

JW: 아니요. 하지만 이곳의 좋은 점은 야외에 있으니 건강에 좋고, 몸을 쓸 일이 있다는 거죠. 저는 식물에 관해서는 거의 모릅니다. 밖에 나오고, 좋은 사람들과 어울리고, 건강해 지는 게 좋잖아요. 그래서 일주일에 한 번 이상 오는 거에요. 사회에 환원하는 것 도 좋고요.

No. But what’s nice about this place is that being outdoor, it’s healthy, and there’s physical activity. I know very little about the plants. I guess if you like being outdoors, being with nice people, getting healthy. That’s why I come here more than once a week. It’s nice to give back.

EJ: 원래 샌프란시스코 출신이세요?

Are you from San Francisco?

JW: 평생을 이곳 1마일 이내에서 살았어요, 여기 걸어서 와요.

Yes. I live less than a mile from here, I can walk here.

EJ: 여기에 참여해서 가장 좋은 점은 무엇인가요?

What is the best thing you get out of joining here?

JW: 운동하는 것, 그리고 사람들이요. 뭐랄까, 동지애 같은 게 있어요. 같은 관심사를 가진 사람들, 그리고 정말 좋은 사람들이에요. 정원사들은 굉장히 해박해요, 그래서 많은 걸 배울 수 있죠. 저는 식물학에 관해선 아는게 별로 없어요.

It’s the exercise, and the people, It’s the camaraderie, what you would call it. People with common interest, and just nice people. Gardeners are very knowledgeable, so you learn some stuff here. I know not much about horticulture.

EJ: 다른 곳에도 정원을 가꾸고 계신가요?

Do you do any gardening in other places as well?

JW: 집 뒷마당에 식물이 좀 있어요. 샌프란시스코에서 어떤 것들이 잘 자라는지 배웠긴 해요. 하지만 여기 사람들 때문에 오는 겁니다.

I have some plants in my backyard. I learn about what kinds of plants might grow better in San Francisco. But it’s more about the people here.

EJ: 이곳에서 특별히 좋아하는 업무나 관리구역이 있으신가요?

Is there any particular activity or area you like doing in here?

JW: 저는 모양내고 전지하는 걸 좋아해요. 식물원에서 특별히 편애하는 곳은 없고, 다 좋아합니다.

I like shaping and pruning. Not particular area in the botanical garden, I like them all.

EJ: 이곳의 체계를 개선 할 것이 있을까요?

Any room for improvement in the system here?

JW: 아니요. 사람들, 정원사들, 모두들 좋아요. 정말 해박한 분들이고 도움이 많이 됩니다. 불만사항은 전혀 없어요.

No, all the people, all the gardeners, they are all nice. They are all knowledgeable, all helpful, so no complaints at all.

EJ: 친구라든가 다른 사람들에게도 추천하고 싶으신가요?

Do you recommend this to other people, like friends of yours?

JW: 그럼요, 기꺼이 추천하겠습니다.

For sure I’ll be happy to do that. I recommend it.

인터뷰이 – 자넷 제이콥스 (이하 JJ)

Interviewee – Janet Jacobs

EJ: 본인 소개를 부탁드립니다.

Please introduce yourself.

JJ: 저는 쟈넷이에요. 지금은 은퇴했고요. 올해가 일을 그만 둔 첫 해입니다. 원래 여기(SFBG)서 일했었어요. 지금은 돈을 벌지 않으니 봉사활동을 하고 있죠. 사실 여기(식물원)서는 4년 정도 일 했어요. 그 전엔 학교에서 사무직으로 교장선생님과 15년간 있었고요. 학교를 떠난 이후에 이곳에서도 비슷한 일이 있었기에 이사님과 함께 일할 수 있었어요. 그래서 이곳으로 오게 됐어요. 그리곤 은퇴했죠. 하지만 (은퇴했다고 해서)봉사활동을 못하는 건 아니니까 식물원에 있으면서 제 손에 흙을 묻히고 있습니다. 그전엔 사무실에서 컴퓨터 앞에서만 있었거든요. 지금은 어린이 정원에서 일하고 있어요.

My name is Janet. I’m retired now. This is my first year of not working. I actually worked here (SFBG). I don’t make money any more so I just volunteer here. I actually only worked here four years. Before that I worked at a school about 15 years, in the administration, and I worked with the head. I left the position and there was a position here, similar work, to work with the executive director. So I came here to do that. And I retired. But it’s not going to be able to volunteer, it will be in the garden and be in hands with the dirt. Because before I was in the office, on a computer. Now I work more in the Children’s garden.

EJ: 얼마나 자주 오시나요?

How often do you come here?

JJ:일주일에 한번, 금요일에 와요.

Once a week. On Friday.

EJ: 이곳에서 가장 좋아하시는 활동은 어떤 건가요?

What is your favorite activity here?

JJ:그냥 정원에 있는 자체로 좋아요. 치우고, 잡초 뽑고, 잘라내고, 솎아내고 하는 것들요. 그리고 사람들이요. 봉사활동팀이 정말 훌륭하고 좋아요.

Just being in the garden, cleaning, pulling weeds, cutting back stuff, and clearing. Also the people. It’s a great team of volunteers I think it’s wonderful.

EJ: 개선할 점은 없을까요?

Is there any room for improvement for the management?

JJ: 클로이가 정말 훌륭한 일을 하고 있어요. 게시판과 온라인 모두 잘 돌아가요. 그린팀과 정원가가 함께 일하고, 정원가가 어떤 지도를 주는지, 또 각자의 구역에서 뭘 필요로 하는지를 알아가는 콘셉트가 참 좋아요.

Chloe here does a great job. She’s got the bulletins, online setup, it works pretty well. And the green team concept that works with the gardeners, what kind of guide by the gardener, and what they need, in their area. That works really well.

인터뷰이 – 앤드류 알라리드 (이하AA)

EJ: 본인 소개를 부탁드립니다.

Please introduce yourself.

AA: 저는 스카이라인대학교에 다니는 학생입니다. 간호학을 배우고 있어요. 이곳은 첫 데이트에서 알게 되었는데, 여자친구가 여기 인턴으로 있어서 저를 데려왔죠. 그렇게 알게 되었습니다. 이곳 봉사활동은 세 번 참여했어요. 식물원의 각기 다른 곳에서 일했는데, 식재도 하고, 잡초도 제거하고, 가꾸는 일도 하고요. 정말 재밌었어요.

I am currently going to school, Skyline college. I am in school to be a nurse. I found about this because of my first date, my girlfriend here. She took me to the garden, she works here as an intern, so that’s how I found about this.

So I volunteered three times here. I experienced different parts of the garden, planting and taking out stuffs, and making things pretty. It’s really fun.

EJ: 이곳에 있는 동안 특별한 일이 있었나요?

Was there any particular activity since you’ve been here?

AA:정원사 분들과 자원활동가분들과 함께 있는 게 좋아요. 정말 좋은 분들이거든요. 저는 식물에 대해 잘 모르는데 원리를 다 가르쳐주시더라고요. 햇빛이 얼마나 필요한지, 물은 얼마나 줘야하는지, 어디에서 자라야 하는지 같은 거요. 제가 좋아하는 건 식재하고 자라는 걸 관찰하는 거예요. 다시 돌아와서 ‘꽤 괜찮은데’ 하고 보는 거요.

I like being around all the gardeners and volunteers, they are all very nice. I don’t know about plants but they told me how it works, how much sun they need, how much water they need, what area has to be, in certain place that they have to be. My favorite part was planting stuff, and seeing it grow. When I come back and see “hey, that looks pretty good.”

EJ: 원래 정원일이나 원예에 관심이 있었나요?

Did you have interest in gardening or horticulture in general?

AA: 집에 정원이 있어서 식재를 하죠.

I have a garden in my house so I plant.

EJ: 다른 분들에게 추천하고 싶은 것이 있다면?

What do you recommend to other people?

AA: 아직 식물원에 와보지 않은 분들은 꼭 와서 해보시라고 하고 싶어요. 입장료도 얼마 안돼요. 정말 아름다운 곳이고 향기로워요. 훌륭한 환경이에요

If you haven’t really gone to the garden, I think you really should give it a shot and pay just extra dollars to get in. Because this is such a beautiful place, and it smells pretty nice. Great environment.
