애틀랜타 시민인권센터, 조경가 선정

미국 아틀랜타시에 있는 시민인권센터는, 1억2천5백만불 상당의 박물관과 센터의 사회적 변신을 위한 조경가로 EDAW(Atlanta)와 Hood Design(Oakland, Calif.)을 선정하였다.

EDAW와 Hood Design의 가장 최근 프로젝트에는 워싱턴에 있는 미국 국립 인디언 박물관, 조지아주의 메이콘에 있는 메이콘 야드(The Macon Yards), 샌프랜시스코에 있는 드영박물관(de Young Museum), 그리고 애틀랜타 도심의 Andy Young Tribute 등이 포함된다.

EDAW/Hood Design은 The Freelon Group, HOK(Atlanta), 전시 디자이너인 Gallagher & Associates, 그리고 프로젝트 메니저인 Cousins Properties Inc./Gude Management Group과 함께 조경과 하드스케이프 디자인을 포함한 거의 100,000평방피트에 달하는 시설을 설계하게 된다.

EDAW사의 프로젝트 디렉터인 William Gilchrist 씨는, “우리는 디자인 팀의 일원으로서, 시민과 인권의 보호를 옹호하는 세계와 아틀랜타의 시민들의 경의을 드러내는 랜드마크를 조성하기 위해 겸손하게 참여할 것이다. 또한 우리는 혁신적이고 지속가능한 조경 디자인의 원칙에 대한 우리의 전문성을 발휘하여, 건물의 개념과 앞으로 방문객들이 가질 경험 기회를 확장할 수 있기를 바란다.”고 밝혔다.

지난 3월에 건축회사인 The Freelon Group, a Durham, N.C.와 파트너인 HOK(Atlanta)는 이 프로젝트의 건축가로 기록되어 졌다.

2011년 말 또는 2012년 초에 센테니얼 올림픽공원(Centennial Olympic Park)에서 오픈될 예정인 인권센터는 100,000 평방피트 규모가 될 예정이다. Freelon Group과 HOK가 디자인한 건물은 테라코타로 피복된 빌딩으로, 건물 외부는 마당공간으로 이루어져 원형극장과 전시공간으로 활용될 예정이다. 빌딩은 지속가능성을 강조하며, 에너지와 환경디자인 인증에서 금 또는 은 리더십(silver or gold Leadership)을 부여받기 위해 노력할 예정이다.

Irrigation Consultant Services가 지속가능한 대상지 설계를 위해 참여하게 된다.

Freelon Group과 HOK이 설계한 두 개의 서로 맞물리는 듯한 구조물은 시민권 활동가들이 서로 팔짱을 끼고 행진하는 모습을 연상시킨다.

Civil Rights center picks landscape designer

The Center for Civil and Human Rights announced Friday it has picked landscape architects EDAW Atlanta and Hood Design of Oakland, Calif., to design the grounds of the $125 million museum and center for social change.

The EDAW and Hood Design team’s most recent projects include the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.; The Macon Yards in Macon, Ga.; the de Young Museum in San Francisco; and the Andy Young Tribute in downtown Atlanta.

EDAW/Hood Design will work in under architects of record The Freelon Group and HOK Atlanta, exhibition designer Gallagher & Associates and project manager Cousins Properties Inc./Gude Management Group for the landscape and hardscape design around the 100,000-square-foot facility.

“We are humbled to serve as a member of the center’s design team to help develop a landmark that pays homage to the people of Atlanta and the world who advanced and continue to champion the cause of civil and human rights,” said project director William Gilchrist, of EDAW Atlanta. “We look forward to applying our expertise in innovative, sustainable landscaping design principles to extend the building concept and present opportunities to further the visitor experience.”

In March, The Freelon Group, a Durham, N.C., architectural firm, and partner HOK of Atlanta were named the architects of record on the project.

The center, which is expected to open at Centennial Olympic Park in late 2011 or early 2012, will be about 100,000 square feet. Freelon and HOK’s design features a terracotta-clad building surrounding an exterior courtyard, which will serve as an amphitheater and exhibit space. The building will stress sustainability and strive for silver or gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.

Irrigation Consultant Services has been tapped to come up with a sustainable site design.

The building design by Freelon Group and HOK—of two interlocking structures—evokes the image of civil rights activists marching with interlocked arms.
