Moraxella sp. CK-1 is a bacterium that inhibits the growth of Anabaena cylindrica, a cyanobacterium. In a mixed-culture of A. cylindrica and Moraxella sp. CK-1, the population size of host cells did not show predominant effect on the lytic activity of pathogenic bacteria. The lytic bacteria most efficiently lysed cyanobacterial cells when the ratio of the population size of each microorganism was approximately 1:1 at the cell number of about $5.0{ imes}10^6$ cells/ml. The lytic activity of Moraxella sp. CK-1 against A. cylindrica was highest when host cells grow exponentially, however photosynthetic activity of host cells showed little effect on the bacterial lytic activity. The addition of glucose in the mixed-culture depressed the lytic activity, while the addition of $5{sim}10;mM$ of sodium nitrate stimulated that. At the range of pH $6.0{sim}9.0$, the lytic bacteria exhibited similar activity, while the lytic activity disappeared at pH 10.0. Moraxella sp. CK-1 showed similar lytic activity when the mixed-culture was agitated by a speed of 200 rpm on a rotary shaker as when cultivated in standing position. From these results, it can be concluded that Moraxella sp. CK-1 should lyse A cylindrica through the secretion of lytic materials depending on the growth activity, especially on the nitrogen-fixing ability, of host cells.
