An annual dynamics of phytoplankton community in lake Daechung was studied at weekly intervals from October 1997 to October 1998. Total 109 taxa were recorded, of which 14 taxa became dominant at least once. The cell densities of the phytoplankton showed under 5,000 cells/mL until late June when the water temperature was below $25^{circ}C$. However, they rapidly increased over 10,000 cells/mL since early July. Microcystis aeruginosa, M. ichthyoblabe, Anabaena planctonica, A. spiroides var. crassa, Oscillatoria limosa mainly caused cyanobacterial blooms from July to mid October. Diatoms were dominant for about seven months from late October 1997 to mid April 1998 when water temperature was below $20^{circ}C$. However, their dominance shifed to blue green. algae since July with water temperature greater than $20^{circ}C$. Phytoplankton cell densities were abruptly decreased since August 17 because of the heavy rain over 300 mm during the week. The decrease may be caused by the confusion of water thermal stratification and the direct flushing effect. In this study, it is proposed that flushing should be an effective measure to control cyanobacterial blooms in dam reservoir.
