Ecosystem health of the Nakdong River was assessed by application of the concepts exergy, exergy ratio, and specific (structural) exergy. The three concepts are explained in detail. Exergy measures the distance from thermodynamic equilibrium and thereby also measures the ability of ecosystem to grow. On the other hand, exergy ratio of phytoplankton to zooplankton biomass accounts for ecological balance between two species. Specific (structural) exergy accounts for the information content of the ecosystem per unit of biomass and thereby measures the species diversity and the level of organization. Considering all the results, it may be concluded that these three concepts could cover ecosystem health indices defined by Costanza (1992). Therefore, exergy increases with increased algal biomass which shows the better potential for growth. Exergy ratio of phytoplankton to zooplankton shows a biased distribution between two organisms. Specific exergy decreases with increased algal biomass, which means that Nakdong River (Mulgum) has lower biodiversity, and lower contents of information per unit of biomass.
