| Physico-chemical characteristics and phytoplankton community dynamics in a weir reach of the lower Yangsan Stream were investigated from February 1993 to December 1996. The Yangsan Stream is a typical 4th-order agricultural/urban stream and it's hydrology is strongly controlled by series of weirs. The weir reach was in the range of eutrophic state ($chl,;{alpha},;37{pm}73;{mu}g/l$). The physico-chemical parameters at the weir reach were highly fluctuating by the loading of industrial wastewater and agricultural runoff (water temperature, $4{sim}32^{circ}C$; turbidity, $4.4{sim}28.1$ NTU; DO, $4{sim}14.9$ mg/l; conductivity, $82{sim}1820;{mu}S/cm$; alkalinity, $11{sim}222$ mg/1; pH, $6.3{sim}9.0$; TP, $54{sim}1155;{mu}g/l;;TN,;2.0{sim}18.3;mg/l$). There was a strong periodicity of phytoplankton during the study period; cryptomonads, small centric diatom and euglenoids were co-dominant in winter whereas green algae was dominant species in summer. High loading of organic pollutants and sediment-water interaction possibly caused green algae and euglenoids dominance. In this stream, characteristics of water quality and phytoplankton community dynamics tended to be the mixed type between lotic and lentic ecosystem. |
