In order to characterize the metabolic diversity of bacterial communities with the basis of carbon source utilization in groundwater, samples were collected from two sites used for drinking water source and eight sites polluted with heavy metal from the wastewater in Seoul city. Color development value in a Biolog GN plate was obtained in 155 hour after incubation as an optimum incubation time. Drinking groundwater samples showed greater utilization of carbon source than waste groundwater samples by bacteria. Groundwater bacterial communities showed a large degree of utilization in polymer, carbohydrate, ester, and amino acid, but low both in brominated and phosphorylated chemicals. The results of multidimensional scaling and cluster analyses separated five distinctive groups on the ordination space; group 1 (drinking groundwater), group 2 (trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene), group 3 (chrome), group 4 (nitrate), group 5 (arsenic). From the result, it was supposed that various pollutants were affected on metabolic diversity of bacterial communities.
