In order to develop a new suitable toxicity testing fish in Korea, the candidate fish were selected by the criteria of selection for testing fish. To select a widely distributed and abundant fish, we used the data of fish fauna collected from 5,150 stations during the period from 1983 to 1990 in the country. The 19 species, within the top 20th place in its number of collection site as distribution range and relative abundance as abundance item, were selected. According to the life cycle (less than 2 years in period of sexual maturation) and size of adult (less than 10 cm in total length), Rodeus ocellatus, Pseudorasbora parva, and Aphyocypris chinensis were selected among them. Rodeus ocellatus was excluded from three candidate fish because it uses the shell fish of Unionidae as a spawning substrate. Of the final two candidates, rearing and induction of natural spawning tests in the laboratory conditions were carried out to investigate the easiness of breeding and possibility of natural spawning all year around. As a result, Pseudorasbora parva was found out to be easily infectious and difficult to reproduce, and inferior to Aphyocypris chinensis in all observation items. Therefore, Aphyocypris chinensis was finally selected as a candidate fish for a new standard testing fish in Korea, based on its excellent reproducibility and easiness of culture.
