The rates of urea carbon decomposition and urea nitrogen uptake by phytoplankton were examined in the upper euphotic zone of six reservoirs located in the North and South Han River. The rates of urea carbon decomposition and urea nitrogen uptake were 2 to $70;{mu}g;ureaC;m^{-3};h^{-1}$ and 7 to $170;{mu}g;ureaN;m^{-3};h^{-1}$ in the light, and 1 to $16;{mu}g;ureaC;m^{-3};h^{-1}$ and 3 to $120;{mu}g;ureaC;m^{-3};h^{-1}$ in the dark. These rates were related to both the chlorophyll-a amount and photosynthesis. The daily rates of urea carbon decomposition and nitrogen uptake were calculated as 0.1 to $1.0;mgC;m^{-3};day^{-1}$ and 0.1 to $3.8;mgN;m^{-3};day^{-1}$. The estimated turnover time of urea in the surface water was 1 to 100 days. Linear regression analysis and the ratio of urea carbon decomposition to urea nitrogen uptake indicate that equivalent amounts of urea nitrogen with urea carbon decomposition are simultaneously taken up as a nitrogen source for phytoplankton in reservoirs.
