Temporal and spatial variations in chironomid communities in the Soktae stream, a tributary of the Suyong river, were investigated through monthly collections from March 1992 to October 1994. The stream was gradually polluted with agricultural effluents and domestic sewage as it flowed down. In total forty four species of chironomid larvae were collected during the study period. The impact of pollution appeared higher in chironomid communities as the degree of pollution was increased: the species richness and diversity indices were decreased while dominance indices were increased. Seasonal trends in species richness and diversity were observed at the relatively clean sites. Rain fall affected more strongly in densities in chironomid community during the study period. Relative abundance of Chironomus flaviplumus, the dominant species at highly polluted sites, could be a useful key in detecting severe level of organic pollution in urban streams.
