Release rate of nutrients and effect of some environmental parameters were measured in the continuous flow systems with the sediments from Seo-Naktong River. At low dilution rate, the concentrations of ${NH_4}^+;and;{PO_4}^{3-}$ in the water column were increased, and which suppressed the release of these ions from the sediment. Low concentration of dissolved oxygen enhanced the release of ${NH_4}^+;and;{PO_4}^{3-}$. Low temperature and heavy metals such as $Cu^{2+};and;Cd^{2+}$ did not significantly affect the release of ${NH_4}^+;and;{PO_4}^{3-}$, however, they inhibited the oxidation of ${NH_4}^+$, and reduced the Concentration of ${NO_3}^-$. At low dilution rate and dissolved oxygen conditions, the average release rates of ${NH_4}^+;and;{PO_4}^{3-}$ were $20.4;mg-N;m^{-2};day^{-1};and;8.1;mg-P;m^{-2};day^{-1}$, respectively. Considering the average surface area, storage capacity, and retention time of Seo-Naktong River, ${NH_4}^+;and;{PO_4}^{3-}$ concentrations released from the sediments accounted for $6.6{sim}39.8%;of;{NH_4}^+$ and $63.0{sim}100%;of;{PO_4}^{3-}$ measured in the field. These results suggest that nutrients release from the sediments is the main cause of eutrophication and deterioration of water quality in Seo-Naktong River.
