The spermatozoon of Liobugrus medicdiposalis conformed to the general pattern of primitive spermatozoa with external fertilization. However, the major differences were the presence of numerous mitochondria, the protruding process of the anterior nuclear membrane and two flagella. The basal nucleus was depressed with two deep nuclear fossae. Each one of the fossae contained the distal centriole instead of having a proximal and a distal centriole in a uniflagellated spermatozoon. The centrioles were parallel to each other and functioned as the basal bodies for the axonemes. The satellite fibers extending from the centrioles to the nucleus might be responsible for the stabilization of the spatial relationship between the nucleus and the centrioles. The mitochondria of 40 or more were not fused and were arranged in two to three layers in the postnuclear cytoplasm and in number. The spermatozoon had two flagella, and each of them had two axonemal fins. The axonemal fins were the closest to axonemal doublet 3 and 8. The outer wall lining the cytoplasmic canal had numerous links joining the plasma membrane and a kind of ER cisterns. The spermatozoon of L. mediadiposalis resembled to that of the Siluridae and Bagridae in the spherical nucleus, the deep nuclear fossa, the arrangement of mitochondria and the organization of the flagellum. However, the spermatozoon of the south torrent catfish had the process of the anterior nuclear membrane, two nuclear fossae and two axonemes not as in Siluridae and Bagridae and the axonemal fins as in Bagridae. Thus, the organization of the mid-piece and the sperm tail appears to indicate a rather close phylogenetic relationship between Amblycipitidae and Bagridae.
