The seasonal changes of epilithic diatom community in streams with different land use and water quality were examined in a $3{sim}4th$ order urban (Yangjae, Seoul) and a mountain stream (Sagimak, Kyeonggi-do) from March 1996 to October 1998. Nutrient levels in Yangjae (TN: 8.9 mg/l, TP: 0.42 mg/l) were three to four times higher than those of Sagimak (TN: 1.9 mg/l, TP: 0.13 mg/l). Average periphyton biomass $(chl.;{alpha})$ of Yangjae stream $(62{pm}67;mg/m^2,;n=22)$ was three times higher than that of Sagimak stream ($17{pm}11;mg/m^2$, n=11). In both streams, biomass was relatively higher in spying and lower in summer, and was strongly influenced by the total summer precipitaion. Saprophilous, indifferent, and saproxenous taxa in Yangjae stream accounted for 50, 48.8, 1.2% of total periphyton species, respectively. While in the Sagimak stream, saproxenous taxa occupied 56.8%, followed by indifferent taxa (44.6%) and saprophilous taxa (0.8%). Dominant diatom species were quite contrasting in both streams (Yangjae: Navicula subminuscuta and Nitzschia palea; Sagimak: Achnanthes convergens and Cymbella minuta).
