| Seasonal characteristics of water quality and phytoplankton community were investigated at two sites, Chudong (Site 1) and Hoenam (Site 2) in Daechung Reservoir from May to November, 1998. We analyzed geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) in water and algal cells using gas chromatograph equipped with purge & trap concentrator. Seasonal variations of phytoplankton were found to be related with physical and chemical conditions such as temperature, pH and ratio of total nitrogen to total phosphorus. At Site 1, cyanobacteria were major dominant group, accounting toy approximately 54% on the basis of cell numbers, and geosmin was detected at 1.1 and 18.1 ng/mg dry weight in July and August, respectively. At Site 2, the level of cyanobacterial dominance was over 63%, and geosmin levels were 0.7 and 69.8 ng/mg in July and August, respectively, while MIB level was 0.6 ng/mg in ,July. It is postulated that geosmin and MIB are mainly produced by Anabaena among the cyanobacteria which are dominant throughout the blooming season in July and August in Daechung Reservoir. |
