Yangpyeong House Garden

2012년 봄에 용문산 근처에 있는 주택정원 작업을 하게 되었다. 나지막한 뒷산이 있는 아늑한 분지에 작은 마을이 있고, 마을의 중심부에 위치한 주택이었다. 3,000㎡ 정도의 다소 넓은 대지에 펼쳐진 창고 모양의 주택이었는데 설계를 하던 중 갑자기 병원에 입원하면서 잠깐 일을 쉬게 되었고, 결국 프로젝트를 할 수 없게 되었다. 두 달이 흘러 건축가와 건축주가 다시 부탁을 해왔는데, 감사한 마음에 거절할 수가 없었다. 일을 시작한 후 땅을 조금씩 만들어가며 나도 기력을 회복했다. 점점 대지의 형상이 다듬어지며 아름다워지는 모습에 다 함께 즐거워하면서 내 몸과 마음도 다시 건강해졌다. 한편 현장을 오가며 보는 팔당호수의 풍경은 인상적이었다. 특히 이른 아침 물안개 오르는 풍경은 잊을 수 없다. 나에겐 여러 가지로 치유가 되는 프로젝트였다.

시나리오
기다란 선형의 주택은 긴 동선을 만들고 여기에 연결된 공간들을 체험하며 다양한 감각을 느끼게 된다. 단순하지만 조금씩 다른 공간들은 시간에 따라 계속 변화하며 풍부한 이미지를 만들어낸다.
마당의 선형은 단순하지만 경계부에 소나무 숲과 억새초지가 있다. 이는 원경과 더불어 미묘한 경관의 변화를 만들어내며, 밤에는 은은하게 지형과 숲의 선형이 드러나 또 다른 인상적인 모습을 제공한다.
세 개의 숨겨진 정원은 각기 다른 재료로 연출했다. 첫 번째 정원은 거실과 연결된 뒷마당으로, 넓은 데크 뒤편을 흙과 건생의 식물원으로 구성했는데 밝은 햇빛이 들어올 수 있도록 초본으로만 식재하였다. 담으로 둘러싸여 미기후로 인해 겨울 늦게까지 식물이 건강하게 남아있다.
두 번째 정원은 복도 옆 낮은 창 너머에 있는 마당으로 다양한 색깔의 풀을 배치하여 미묘한 질감, 색감의 변화를 느낄 수 있도록 했다.
세 번째는 별채 앞 전정Front Garden으로 이끼와 속새를 심어 노출콘크리트 외벽과 대비되도록 했다. 속새와 이끼는 사철 푸르러 담백한 공간에 생기를 불어넣는다.
뒷마당은 채원이 있고 작업공간으로 활용될 것이다. 두 마리의 진돗개가 놀 수 있는 공간이기도 한다. 태양광을 받는 집열판은 세 개로 분리되어 조형물처럼 보이기도 한다.

Spring 2012, I started a house garden project near the Yongmunsan Mountain. It located in the middle of a small village on a snug plateau with a hill at the back. The house which reminds me of a warehouse on a quite large site of 3,000㎡ was very beautiful. But abrupt hospitalization exerted me to cease the project. Two months had passed away. Thanks to patient waiting of the architect and the client, I could not help but resume it. While making garden soil, I regained my vigor. As the site took shape, everybody was happy and my soul and body became healthy again. Meanwhile, the scenery of the Paldang Lake on the way to the site was very impressive. I would not forget the early morning haze on the lake. This project healed me in many ways.

Scenarios
Long linear house creates a long moving line, and provides multisensory spatial experiences. Simple but diverse spaces create rich image with the flow of time. There are pine tree groves and miscanthus sinensis meadows at the border of the simple yard. With a distant view, this creates subtle changes of landscape, including impressive night scenery of gentle landform and forest.
I used different materials for three secret gardens respectively. First garden is a backyard connected to living room, where xerophilous plants grow at the behind of the large deck.
I only planted herbaceous plants so as to get enough sunshine. Thanks to walled microclimate, plants remain verdant in late winter.
In order to provide subtle changes in texture and colors, I arranged plants in various colors in the second garden, which is located over the lower window next to corridor.
I planted mosses and horsetails in the third garden in front of the outhouse so as to contrast with exposed concrete exterior wall. Horsetails and mosses enliven this simple space all year round.
Kitchen garden and working space are created at the backyard. It is also a playground for two Jindo dogs. Three separated solar walls looks like a sculpture.
