[인터뷰] 미카 사피스키 SoFi 소프트웨어 엔지니어

샌프란시스코 식물원은 샌프란시스코의 최대 공원인 골든게이트 파크 내 남동쪽에 자리하고 있다. 식물원만으로도 55ac(22.3ha)에 이르는 큰 규모로, 모체인 골든게이트 파크(1017ac, 412ha)는 센트럴파크(840ac, 340ha)보다 20%정도 넓은 면적을 차지하고 있다. 총 8500종이 넘는 식물들을 보유하고 있으며, 호주, 칠레, 뉴질랜드, 동남아 등 세계 각지의 식물들을 지역별로 전시 수집하여, 구역별로 배정된 소속 원예가들이 관리하고 있다.

처음의 방문 목적은 자원봉사를 빙자한 자생식물관찰이었지만, 다른 도시에서 만나기 힘든 새로운 커뮤니티를 만나게 되어 이렇게 소개하고자 한다. 재능기부를 빙자한 무료 노동이 뜨거운 감자로 떠오른 시점에 작은 울림이 되길 바라며, 이 글은 모두 인터뷰로만 구성하였다. 구어체로 번역하여 일부 원예가와 정원가, 정원과 식물원의 혼용을 양해 바란다.

EJ: 본인 소개를 부탁드립니다.

Please introduce yourself.

MS: 미카 사피스키입니다. SoFi 사에서 소프트웨어 엔지니어로 일하고 있습니다.

My name is Micah Sapitsky. I am a software engineer at a company called SoFi.

EJ: 이 봉사활동 일을 하신지는 얼마나 되셨나요?

How long have you done this volunteer program?

MS: 두 달 쯤 되었습니다. 매주 토요일에 그린팀으로 오전 아홉시부터 정오까지 일합니다.

About two months; I volunteer every Saturday. With the green team it’s between nine to noon.

EJ: 이 곳은 어떻게 알게 되셨나요?

How did you find this?

MS: 어느 주말에 친구와 같이 식물원에 왔었어요. 그러다가 온라인으로 봉사활동을 찾아봤고, 책임자인 클로이에게 연락을 했습니다. 처음에 그린팀 오리엔테이션을 받는데, 이건 한 달에 한 번 있어요, 그 후엔 포털사이트에 가서 (등록하는 대로) 일 할 수 있죠.

I just came to the botanical garden on one weekend with a friend. Then I went online and sought for volunteer opportunities, just reached out to Chloe, she’s the one in charge. Then you go to green team orientation, it’s like once a month, then you can just signup through the portal.

EJ: 식물원 일에 원래 관심이 있었나요?

Did you have interest in this kind, like botanical garden?

MS: 실내식물을 기르기 시작했어요. 이 일은 식물에 관해서 배우는 좋은 기회이기도 하고, 그저 밖에 나오는 자체로도 좋지요. 어릴 때 마당 있는 곳에서 자랐는데, 주말에 마당가꾸기를 하곤 했어요. 이곳(샌프란시스코)에 오면서 마당 같은 건 없어졌죠. 여긴 온통 아파트니까요. 저는 LA와 달라스에서 자랐어요. 지금은 러시안 힐쪽에 살아요. 정원 따위 없죠.

I have indoor plants, started getting into that. I thought this would be a good opportunity to learn more about plants as well as be outside. Because I grew up having like a yard, working in the yards on the weekends. When I moved here (San Francisco) basically no yards. Everything is apartment. I grew up in LA and Dallas. Now I live in Russian Hill. No garden, this is it.

EJ: 저도 오리엔테이션에 갔을 때 비슷한 이야기들을 들었습니다.

I heard similar stories from the other orientation I joined.

MS: 네. 좋은 일이라고 생각해요. 이 큰 정원을 가진 셈이니까요.

Definitely, it’s nice. Because you have this whole garden to work on.

EJ: 관리체계면에서, 이곳을 찾아와서 참여하기 쉽다고 보시나요?

For the management system, do you think it’s easy to find and get involved?

MS: 웹 사이트만 찾아올 수 있다면요. 식물원의 마케팅 자료를 많이 본 건 아니지만, 연중 행사로 이것저것 많이 하는 걸로 알고 있어요. 예를 들면 플라워 피아노 같은 거요. 지금 한참 준비 중이죠. (*인터뷰 시점은 그로부터 약 2주전쯤이었다) 사람들을 만나고 봉사자들을 만날 수 있는 좋은 기회에요. 아마 저도 참여할 거예요.

I think so, if you’re on the website. I haven’t seen much like marketing things of botanical garden, but I know they have a lot of events throughout the year, like flower piano, now they are pushing that. It’s a good way for people to see and experience and see volunteers. I can probably do that too.

EJ: 이곳에서 두 달 정도 계시면서, 재미있는 일은 없었나요?

Since you’ve been here for two months, do you have any fun experience?

MS: 이곳의 가장 큰 이점은 여기서 만난 사람들이에요. 사람들이 워낙 친절하고 모두가 같은 관심사를 가지고 있죠, 야외에서 식물관리를 돕는 거요. 같은 생각을 가진 사람들과 만나는 커뮤니티라서 잘 어울리고, 좋은 이야기도 많이 나눠요.

One of the main benefits here is the people you meet. Everyone is so friendly and everyone here has same interest, being outside and helping with the plants and volunteering. It’s a community with people like-minded, have same interest so it’s easy to get along, and have nice conversations.

EJ: 매주 토요일마다 초록을 만나는 것도 본인에게 도움이 되나요?

Is it beneficial for you to see the greenery on every Saturday?

MS: 그럼요. 특히 오늘처럼 날씨가 좋은 때는 그냥 태닝하고 누워있는 것 보다, 밖에 나와서 뭔가를 하는 게 더 좋잖아요.

Definitely. Especially when weather’s good like today, it’s good to be outside and doing something other than just tanning and laying out.

EJ: 토요일 아침부터 일하기가 쉽지 않은데요.

Some people would find this surprising that you’re working on Saturday morning.

MS: 맞아요, 많은 일을 하죠. 그런데 많이 하고 싶으면 많이 하고, 적게 하고 싶으면 적게 하면 되요. 무릎보호판 대고 잡초만 뽑을 수도 있고요. 그런 건 쉬운 일이죠. 여기엔 다양한 일거리들이 있는 것 같아요. 예를 들면 멀칭은 통에 든 것들을 그냥 뿌리면 되고요, 아무튼 다양해요. 일 년 중 언제인지는 아직 모르겠는데 식재를 하기도 해요. 기회는 많은 셈이죠.

Yes, this is a lot of work. I mean that there’s you can do as much as you want or as little as you want. You can just get a kneeling pad and just weed for a while, that’s pretty easy. I think they have wide range of things, like mulching, bucket of small things and spreading it, so there’s definitely wide variety. I don’t know what time of the year, they also do planting. There’s definitely a lot of opportunities.

EJ: 특히 본인이 좋아하는 작업이 있다면요?

Anything you like particular?

MS: 저는 제거작업을 좋아해요, 큰 잡초나 나무를 뽑아내는 거요. 블랙베리 덩굴은 뿌리가 엄청나거든요, 그래서 땅을 많이 파내고 뽑아내야 해요. 저는 그런 걸 좋아해요. 왜냐면 주중에는 저는 컴퓨터 앞에 앉아서 코딩만 하거든요. 여기 나와서 이런 활동적인 일을 하는 게 좋아요.

I like more of the demolitions, like taking out the big weeds and trees, the blackberry vines, they have crazy roots, so you got to do a lot of diggings to get those out. That’s the stuff I enjoy doing. Because during the week all I do is just sitting in front of computer and code. It’s nice to get out here and do something active.

EJ: 이 곳 관리면에서 더 개선할 점은 없을까요?

Any room for improvement in their management system?

MS: 별로요. 저는 여기 오래있었던 건 아니지만, 어떤 단계에서든지, 뭘 원하든지, 여기 오면 할 일들이 있거든요. (봉사활동의) 기회가 많죠.

Not really. I guess I haven’t been here that long, but it’s great that at any skill level, or whatever that they want to do, I think they have. There are opportunities for them.

EJ: 이곳에 오고싶어 하는 분들께 한 말씀 부탁드려요.

Do you want to share anything with those who potentially want to come here?

MS: 와서 한 번 해보는 건 쉬운 일이에요. 오리엔테이션도 받아보시고요. 그린팀 말고도 스튜어드일처럼 식물원 내를 같이 걸으며 다양한 식물들에 관해 소개하는 것도 있는데, 식물에 관해 더 배우고 싶은 사람들에게 좋은 기회겠죠.

It’s pretty easy to come and try it out. Do an orientation. There are also other opportunities besides green team, like stewards, just walk people through the garden and talk about different plants, so for someone who just wants to learn about plants there’s an opportunity.
