알리스테어 맥인토시(ASLA)의 조경스케치
조경가 알리스테어 맥인토시(Alistair McIntosh, 이하 맥인토시)의 갖가지 스케치북들이 작업준비를 위해 책상에 놓여있다. 색연필, 먹칼, 흑연, 목탄, 붓, 노란 트레이싱지 뭉치, 몽블랑 만년필, 그리고 제도용 스케일도 함께 보인다. 작은 계산기와 블랙베리 휴대폰만이 여기에 어울리지 않는 유일한 전자장치이다. 화면을 완성해주고 있는 커피 한 잔과 두 개의 사과가 하루를 위한 영양소이다. 그의 책상에 보이는 작은 포켓 크기에서부터 풍경화 판형에 이르는 다양한 크기의 네다섯 개의 스케치북들은 그가 그의 동료들이나 더 나아가 세계 조경가들이 하는 일과 다른 독특함을 만들어 준다. 그리고 컴퓨터 화면과 함께 다른 사람이 출력해놓은 캐드 도면들도 책상의 한켠을 채우고 있다. 그는 과거에서 해왔던 스케치와 연습 방식을 통해서 세심하고 계획적으로 작업을 진행한다. 필자는 그가 과거 수세기 동안 조경가, 화가, 그리고 다자이너들이 해왔던 전통적인 방식을 따르면서 그것을 커뮤니케이션이 가능한 형태로 변화시켜 묘사가 가능한 디자인 도구나 미래를 위한 프로세스로 삼음으로써, 조경 설계의 진보 적이고, 객관적인 견해를 대변하고 있다고 생각한다(그림 1).

The many and varied sketchbooks of landscape architect Alistair McIntosh lie open across his desk ready for work alongside collections of colored pencils, ink pens, graphite sticks, charcoal, brushes, rolls of yellow trace, Mont Blanc fountain pens and drafting scales. A small calculator and a blackberry cell phone are the only electronic devices intruding on the scene. A cup of coffee and two green apples for nourishment during the day complete the ensemble. But it is the four or five sketchbooks of all sizes from pocket to landscape format that mark his desk as quite different from his colleagues and indeed unique from many landscape architects working around the world. There is little sign of a computer screen, although printed construction CAD drawings by others also litter his desk. He is giving studied attention to the daily work of landscape architecture through the ancient act of personal sketching and study. He represents, in my opinion, a forward looking and projective view of landscape design as one that still follows in the traditions of landscape architects, painters and designers from previous centuries yet manages to transform it into a personal yet accessible form of communication and representational design tool and set of processes for the future.(Figure 1)
