Lyric-Landscape Design of Catholic Retreat Center

현대에는 내적 치유를 찾아 떠나는 종교여행객이 크게 늘어나고 있다. 이에 따라 불교의 ‘산사체험Temple-Stay’과 가톨릭의 ‘피정Retreat’, 개신교의 ‘수련회’가 하나의 대안 휴가로 자리 잡고 있다.2 전 세계적으로도 피정시설에 대한 수요가 급증하고 있는데, 특히 북미에서는 1960년대 이후로 범종교적 피정시설이 약 2,000여 개가 생겨났다.
이처럼 물질적인 조건이 충족될수록, 그리고 자유분방한 시대일수록 오히려 내적인 수련이나 영적인 재충전을 원하는 사람들이 늘어나는 경향이 있다. 그러나 현대의 종교시설 이론은 건축, 실내디자인, 미술 분야에 집중되어 있으며 경관에 대한 논의는 상대적으로 미약한 편이다.
가톨릭계에서는 주요 피정프로그램 중 하나인 성 이냐시오 로욜라San Ignacio de Loyola 의 ‘영신수련Exercitia Spiritualia ’을 평신도에 맞게 적용시켜 나가고 있다. 영신수련은 내적인 여정, 내적인 순례라고도 표현되며, 주요 방법인 ‘관상기도Contemplatio’는 일종의 이미지 기도로서 경관과도 깊은 관련이 있다. 더불어 피정자는 기도와 명상, 산책에 대부분의 시간을 할애하기 때문에 외부공간이 주요 활동무대라고 할 수 있다. 즉, 대자연 속에서 경건한 분위기를 체험하는 것이 종교적 휴양시설의 가장 중요한 관건인 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 영신수련 과정에서 시적 경관의 설계어휘를 풍부하게 추출해내고, 이를 실제 피정시설에 적용해보고자 하였다.

The number of religious travelers has continuously been on the rise these days. They are seeking to find inner healing. As a result, the ‘emple-stay’experience offered by Buddhism and the ‘etreat’program arranged by Catholicism have emerged as an alternative way of spending holidays. There has been growing demand for retreat facilities worldwide, and in North America only, approximately 2,000 pan-religious retreat facilities have been newly established since the 1960s.
The reason behind this phenomenon is that although living in the age of material affluence and expanded freedom, more and more people tend to look for inner disciplines or spiritual recharge. However, contemporary theories on religious facilities focus mainly on architecture, interior design, and artistic composition, while paying far less attention to landscape architecture.
Catholic Church has developed and adapted San Ignacio de Loyola’ ‘xercitia spiritualia,’one of its major retreat programs, for general public. The spiritual exercise is also called interior journey or interior pilgrimage, and ‘ontemplatio,’one of the Catholic Church’ primary exercising methods, is a kind of a prayer on images, closely related to landscape. In addition, as retreat participants spend majority of their time contemplating, praying, and taking a walk, outdoor environment is where most activities take place. As a result, it is the most important for religious retreat centers to provide the experience of Mother Nature in reverent atmosphere. This study aims to derive a variety of design elements of lyric-landscape from spiritual exercises and apply them to retreat facilities in reality.
