Be Deeply Moved  

오늘 아침 이곳저곳에 뿌릴 씨앗들을 정리하며, 이 꽃은 어느 정원에, 이 풀은 어느 둔덕에 심겨 우리를 행복하게 해 주려나 하는 기대감으로 잔잔한 흥분을 느꼈습니다.
<환경과조경>이 이번 호로 300회가 된다는 이야기를 듣고, 한알 한알의 씨앗이 싹트고 꽃피어 우리로 하여금 행복과 찬탄의 순간순간을 만들어 주듯 조경에 관련된 전공서는 물론 잡지 한 권 없던 불모지에 첫 호를 내기 시작한 <환경과조경>은 그때부터 그리고 지금까지 얼마나 많은 조경인들에게 정보 제공의 차원을 넘어, 조경인들에게 프라이드를 심어 준 힘이었고 조경인들을 결속하는 사랑의 끈이었는지 생각해 봅니다.

돌이켜 보면, 첫 호의 태동은 ‘감격’ 그 자체였답니다. 잡지사에 근무했다는 일천한 경력 때문에 저를 기획과 편집부터 온갖 궂은일까지 고루 참여시킨 지금의 발행인이신 ‘은사’님의 특명으로 사무실도, 비품도, 하다못해 사진기조차 개인적인 조달로 시작한 작업이었고, 그때 참여하신 거의 모든 분들은 자원봉사에 가까웠습니다.
오직 조경계를 위해 하지 않으면 안 될 일이라는, 그러면서 그 일이 얼마나 즐겁고 재미있는 일인지 편집기간 내내 웃음이 그치지 않던 기억이 납니다. 당시에 같이 즐거운 고통을 나누던 편집장 김용택 화백님, 김현선 선생, 나현영 여사, 그리고 유병림 교수님 등등 그리운 분들입니다.
지금 이렇게 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 정확한 날에 어김없이 책상 앞에 전달되는 <환경과조경>을 보지만, 그동안 이 잡지 출판의 지속성 때문에 발행인이신 오휘영 교수님을 비롯해서 많은 분들의 가슴이 조마조마한 일들이 얼마나 많았는지 모릅니다. 그러나 추억은 아무리 어렵고 힘든 일도 아름답게 기억하게 해줍니다.

또 다시 씨앗으로 돌아가 봅니다. 저는 민들레, 할미꽃, 그리고 박주가리 씨앗을 어릴 때부터 무척이나 좋아했습니다. 하얀 털이 달린 씨앗, 그 한 대를 꺾어 들고 ‘후’ 불면 얼마나 멀리 날아가는지, 날아가서 잘 뿌리내리고 싹트고 꽃피고 다시 씨앗이 바람을 타고 날고… 얼마나 멀리까지 날아갈까 상상하곤 했습니다.
그런데 지구를 한바퀴 돈, 먼 이국땅에서 여전히 노랗게 핀 민들레를 보면서 씨앗의 여정이랄까, 식물의 퍼져가는 힘에 새삼 놀라워했습니다. 물론 지금도 그 경이로운 여정에 찬탄을 금할 수 없습니다. 그와 같이 <환경과조경>은 앞으로도 한국 조경계의 유일한 잡지로서의 긍지와 정진의 자세로 여전히 확장되어 나갈 것이고, 고난의 순간이 닥쳐와도 슬기롭게 대처해 나갈 수 있는 저력을 가지고 있음을 믿어 의심치 않습니다. 

아울러 이제 우리 조경계도 좀 더 성숙한 단계로 도약해야만 합니다. 그것은 디자인만이 아닙니다. 공사의 질도 당연히 더 높아지지 않는 한 건축이나 기타 경쟁 분야들과의 전쟁과 같은 경쟁에서 살아남을 수 없습니다. 
조경가가 아니면 안 되는 ‘그 무엇’ 조경가만이 할 수 있는, 사람의 심금을 울릴 수 있는 작업이 되어야 할 것입니다. 산수화의 발묵처럼, 조경인들의 손을 거쳐 나온 모든 일들이 발묵처럼 감동의 여울이 번지고 스미고, 퍼져 나가야 할 때입니다. 
우리가 다루는 것은 살아 있는 땅이고 흙입니다. 우리가 가슴에 담고 있는 태도는 유한한 지구 자원의 지속성에 있고, 환경을 더 이상 파괴하지 않는 것입니다. 따라서 조경가들이 남기는 생태발자국들이 우리 국토를 건강하고 아름답게 보존하고 가꾸는 것이라야 합니다.
조경계가 변하고, 더 한층 질이 높아지고 조경인들이 이 땅에 사는 한 이 땅에 대한 책임을 잊지 않고 걸어가기 위해 300회 간행 기쁨을 넘어 다시 무거운 짐을 지셔야겠습니다. 조경인들로 하여금 더 높은 안목을 기르고, 가야 할, 걸어야 할, 해야 할 일들을 저 만치 앞서서 제시해 주셔야겠습니다. 건투를 빕니다. 거듭 축하드립니다.

This morning I felt a little excited, assorting the flower seeds that I would sow and imagining how they would give pleasure to us upon coming out splendidly.
When I heard the news that ELA was going to publish its 300th issue, I couldn’t help looking back on the days I spent reading the magazines and entertaining myself with them. Like colorful flowers blossoming on hills in the spring, ELA has been a great joy to every professional in the industry, helping enhancing the pride of the landscape architects in the country.

I can still remember vividly how deeply I was moved by the first publication of ELA, when I had to take care of every matter of detail such as maintaining the office and purchasing equipment including even a camera. My insignificant work experience with a magazine publisher made Dr. Whee Young Oh the founder and publisher of ELA as well as my teacher, recruit me. Then Professor Oh let me take part in each and every step in planning and editing process. At that time, all the members of the organization were not employees but volunteers. We worked pleasantly and happily together, knowing that what we were doing could contribute to the development of landscape architecture. I am missing my old colleagues like Yong Taek Kim, Hyun Sun Kim, Hyun Young Nah, and Byung Rim You. We shared each other’s burden and worked co-operatively.
Upon the arrival of the magazine every month, I sometimes think of the times when Professor Oh and the other members of ELA were faced with difficulties continuing the publication. After all these years, those moments have become priceless and treasured memories of good old days.

Let’s get back to the story of seeds. Since my childhood, I have been particularly fond of the seeds of dandelions, pasque flowers, and milkweeds. I played with them, blowing them into the air and imagining how far they would fly, where they would land, and whether they would grow to be beautiful flowers. Living far away from my home country, I still see pretty dandelions in yellow and stand in great awe of the miraculous circle of life in nature. Like these beautiful wild flowers,
I believe, ELA, the most prestigious publication of the industry, will spread around the world and continue its growth, in spite of any difficulties.

In addition, it is time that landscape architecture paid more attention to its future development.
It is not merely about the enhanced quality of design, but also about that of practice. Otherwise, I might be impossible to compete with other industries including architecture. A work of a landscape architect should be what others can never try to imitate, and it should be something extraordinary that can strike a chord in the hearts of the audience. It has to be touching and inspiring.
What we are dealing with are soil and earth full of life, and what we are focused on are the sustainability of the limited amount of resources and the preservation of the environment. Therefore, the ecological footprints of landscape architects should contribute to conserving and protecting the natural environment of Korea.
As the atmosphere of the industry changes over time, the quality of practice is improved, and landscape architects continue to serve as invaluable professional in our society, ELA will have take its responsibility as the leading publication in the country. ELA should actively plays its role in broadening the horizon of landscape architects, and providing directions for the industry with guidance and insight.
