Klyde Warren Park

미사용 중인 8차선 우달 로저스 고속도로(Woodall Rodgers Freeway) 상층부에 건립된 5.2에이커(21,000㎡) 넓이의 클라이드 워렌 파크(klyde Warren Park)는 텍사스주 댈러스시 중심부의 중앙업무지구(Central Business District), 업타운(Uptown), 그리고 새롭게 부상하고 있는 예술지구를 하나로 묶어 주는 보행자 산책로 역할을 하고 있다.

공원 건립은 댈러스시 도심 지역의 지속가능한 성장을 목적으로 시작되었다. 사실 우달 로저스 고속도로 위에 데크 공원을 건립한다는 구상은 1960년대 우달 로저스 고속도로의 사용을 중지하기로 결정한 때부터 거론되었으며 2002년 부동산 업계를 중심으로 이러한 생각이 다시 고개를 들게 되는데, 존 조그(John Zogg)가 앞장서서 이러한 프로젝트에 대한 지지를 결집시키기 시작했다. 이후 우달 로저스 파크 재단(Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation)이 설립되면서 클라이드 워렌 파크의 설계에서 완공까지 프로젝트의 전 과정을 이끌었다.

공원의 설계는 제임스 버넷 설계사무소(The Office of James Burnett)의 책임자 조경가 짐 버넷(Jim Burnett)이 맡아 진행하였다. 공원 설계를 통해 버넷이 의도했던 바는 방문객들이 공원 곳곳에 위치한, 이른바 ‘공간들(rooms)’을 돌아다니면서 발견의 기쁨을 갖도록 하는 것이었다. 이 공원에는 37종의 토착 식물, 322그루의 나무, 그리고 과거 고속도로로 사용됐던 공간을 도심의 오아시스로 탈바꿈시키는 과정 등이 담겨져 있다.

고속도로 위에 조성된 클라이드 워렌 파크는 주변 도로와 수평을 이루고 있으며, 아래쪽에 위치한 고속도로의 모습이 시야에 들어온다. 데크는 그룹으로 묶인 300여 개 이상의 콘크리트빔으로 구성되어 있으며, 지오폼(Geofoam)과 특수 토양을 적절히 결합시켜 데크가 지나치게 무거워지는 것을 예방하도록 하였다.
1억 1천만 달러 규모로 조성된 이 공원은 올리브 스트리트 브리지(Olive Street Bridge)에 의해 반으로 나누어지는데, 공원 전역에 걸쳐 분포하는 보행자 산책로를 통해 하나로 연결된다. 산책로에는 폰드 사이프러스(Pond Cypress) 나무들이 열식되어 산책로를 이어주고 있다.

방문객들은 산책로를 따라 식물원, 물체험(놀이/관람시설)을 갖춘 어린이공원, 독서실, 그리고 잔디마당 등을 가로지르며 이동하게 된다. 올리브 스트리트와 인접한 커다란 공공 광장에는 체험형 분수 시설이 설치되어 있으며, 이 광장을 통해 레스토랑 테라스, 공연용 파빌리온, 그리고 가벼운 테이크아웃 상점 파빌리온 등이 도로와 연결된다.

보행자 산책로는 올리브 스트리트를 지나 동쪽으로 이어지며, 수많은 작은 광장과 정원이 자리 잡고 있다. 보행자 산책로는 이들 광장을 지나 정원 안마당 및 사람들의 반응에 따라 움직이는 분수대가 자리한 반려견 공원 등으로 이어지고 펄 스트리트(Pearl Street)까지 자연스레 연결된다. 공원의 측면을 따라 배치된 참나무숲은 거리를 따라 강렬한 건축적 리듬을 자아낼 뿐만 아니라 인근 도로에서 발생하는 소음을 차단하는 완충재로서의 역할도 하고 있다.

공원의 지속적인 활용을 위해 재단은 음악 공연, 가족 행사, 피트니스 수업, 그리고 스카이라인 견학 등의 다채로운 활동에 지원을 아끼지 않고 있다. 2012년 10월에는 주말 축제 개최를 통해 약 4만 4천 명으로 추산 되는 방문객을 유치한 바 있고, 공원은 댈러스시의 새로운 중심으로 점차 자리매김하고 있다.

Built over the existing Woodall Rodgers Freeway, this 5.2-acre park serves as an important pedestrian connection between the Central Business District, Uptown and the burgeoning Arts District in downtown Dallas, Texas. Bisected by the existing Olive Street bridge, the park is organized by a sweeping pedestrian promenade
that features a continuous canopy of specimen Pond Cypress. The promenade draws visitors through the park past a botanical garden, a children’s garden with an interactive water feature, a reading room, and an event lawn.
A large public plaza adjacent to Olive Street connects the restaurant terrace, the performance pavilion, the casual take-out pavilion to the street and features an interactive fountain feature.

The pedestrian promenade continues to the east across Olive Street and features a number of passive plaza and
garden spaces. The pedestrian promenade continues beyond the plaza and connects to a series of intimate garden courtyards, a dog park with an interactive fountain feature and a signature interactive water feature that anchors the park along Pearl Street. Groves of Oak trees flank the site, providing a strong architectural rhythm along the street and serving as a buffer from the activity of the adjacent frontage roads.

To encourage continued use of the park, the Foundation sponsors daily activities including musical performances, family activities, fitness classes and architectural skyline tours. Opening weekend festivities in late October 2012 attracted an estimated 44,000 visitors and the park is rapidly becoming the new civic heart of Dallas.
