미국조경가협회(The American Society of Landscape Architects, 이하 ASLA)가 지난 8월 28일(화) 2012 ASLA Award 전문가 부문 수상자를 홈페이지를 통해 발표했다.

 

이번 2012 ASLA Award 전문가 부문에서는 일반 디자인, 주거 디자인, 분석 및 계획, 학술연구, 커뮤니케이션 부문에 총 620개의 접수된 작품 중 총 37개의 작품 혹은 기업이 수상의 영예를 안았다.

 

특히 올해에는 랜드마크 부문(Landmark Award)을 번외로 추가하였다. 이 카테고리에서는 완공 15년에서 50년이 지난 작품 중 기존 디자인을 현재까지 잘 보존해오고 있는 작품을 선별하여 수상하게 된다.

 

금년 ASLA Award 전문가 부문에서 눈에 띄는 점은 2010년에 이어 약진을 보이는 중국 조경가들의 활약이다. 

 

특히 일반디자인 부문에서 Turenscape와 북경대학교의 합작인

‘A Green Sponge for a Water-Resilient City: Qunli Stormwater Park’가 최우수상을 거머쥐었다. Turenscape는 2010년에 이어 두번째 최우수상에 선정되어 세계적인 조경설계사무소의 대열에 합류했다.

 

일반디자인 우수상에는 THUPDI와 청화대의 ‘Quarry Garden in Shanghai Botanical Garden’작품이 선정되었다.

 

이 외에도 분석 및 계획 부문에서 북경청화도시계획&디자인협회가 ‘Core Area of Lotus Lake National Wetland Park Landscape Planning’를 주제로 한 작품을 통해 우수상을 수상하였다.

 

중국 외에 아시아권 수상은 주거 디자인 부문의 태국 기업, TROP Company Limited(Quattro by Sansiri)가 유일하다.

 

전통적으로 강세를 보였던 미국 외에 다수의 수상 실적을 쌓아올린 중국 조경가의 활약은 앞으로도 주목되는 부분이다.

 

또 하나 주목할 것은 올해 ASLA가 수상한 커뮤니케이션 부문의 수상작이다.

 

커뮤니케이션 부문의 경우 조경업무, 기술, 역사, 이론 등 수업적인 가치를 가지는 작품 중 인쇄매체, 영화, 비디오, 오디오, 온라인 커뮤니케이션, 전시 등을 대상으로 선정해왔고 그 중 관련 ‘도서 및 연구’가 주를 이루었다.

 

하지만 올해 수상작에는 도서 이외에도 소셜을 기반한 웹사이트가 선정되면서 눈길을 끌었다.

 

‘Landscape Urbanism Website and Journal(Sarah Peck, ASLA)’은 조경인들의 담론을 생성하고 공유할 수 있는 소셜기반 웹사이트이다. ASLA의 이번 수상자 발표를 통해 온라인을 기반한 조경 지식 커뮤니티의 중요성이 더욱 부각될 전망이다.   

 

‘Landscape Urbanism Website’는 랜드스케이프 어바니즘 관련 업무나 프로젝트 등에 관한 이메일 문의를 기반으로 새로운 이슈를 블로그 또는 SNS(페이스북, 트위터 등)에 공유하고 있다. 이 사이트에는 랜드스케이프 어바니즘 이론의 창시자 ‘찰스왈드하임’도 참여하고 있다.

 

한편, 올해 시상식은 미국 애리조나 피닉스에서 열리는 2012 미국조경가협회 연례회의 및 EXPO 기간인 10월 1일(월)에 개최될 예정이다.

Turenscape가 제안한 이 작품을 통해 현대 도시의 이슈인 폭우가 조경의 영역에서 다루고 해결할 수 있는 좋은 사례를 보여주고 있다.

 

특히 ‘그린 스폰지’로 불리는 이 공간은 폭우시 물을 저장하는 역할을 통해 도심지의 범람과 물부족을 막고 있다.

 

이 그린 스폰지에 저장된 물은 생태계와 연결되어 서식지와 대수층에 각각 공급할 뿐만 아니라 레크리에이션과 심미적인 경험을 할 수 있는 도시기반 시설로도 활용되고 있다.
