음악, 영화, 예술, 음식, 패션 등 해외를 ‘한류’가 휩쓸었다. 전 세계가 한국을 발견했고 세계인들의 의식 속에서 한국의 영향력은 나날이 성장하고 있다.

한류 현상이 시작되기 오래 전부터 한국과 세계를 잇는 독특한 연결점이 발견되었다. 그 연결점은 바로 하버드대학교 아놀드수목원이다. 하버드대학교 아놀드수목원은 1872년 설립되었고, 온대성 목본식물의 저장소(살아있는 박물관)로서 북미와 동아시아의 식물수집에 중점을 두고 있다.

일찍이 1905년에 교육가이자 아놀드수목원 직원이었던 존 잭이 한국을 방문했다. (참고로 1905년도는 대한제국에서 을사조약이 강제로 행해졌던 시기이다.) 당시 일본군은 존 잭의 이동을 서울과 평양지역으로 제한했다. 존 잭 교수는 식물수집 임무가 좌절되자 한국인들에게 관심을 돌렸다. 그리고 민족학자들에게 큰 관심을 불러일으키는 한국인 생활상을 사진으로 기록했다.

1917년에 아놀드수목원 일행은 또다시 한국을 방문했다. 어니스트 윌슨은 아내와 딸과 함께 동행했다. 울릉도에 처음 도착하여 한국과 중국의 경계지역으로 점차 식물수집을 확장해 나갔다. 그는 곤고산을 방문하여 극적인 풍경 사진들을 많이 찍었다. 또한 제주도와 지리산도 방문했다. 윌슨은 한국에서 7개월을 보내며 1000마일을 이동했으며, 216개의 사진을 찍었다. 현재 하버드대학교 아놀드수목원에는 당시 한국에서 채집해온 한국 자생수목과 관목 수종들이 잘 자라고 있다.

아놀드수목원 일행의 마지막 주요 한국 식물탐사는 1977년에 이뤄졌다. 그 당시, 아놀드수목원의 스티븐 스폰버그는 씨앗수집 탐사를 진행했다. 천리포수목원 설립자인 칼 펠리스 밀러와 한국과학기술연구원, 산림연구원 조 씨가 함께했다는 스티븐 스폰버그 한국식물탐험에 대한 내용이 아놀드수목원의 저널인 아놀디아에 기록되어 있다.

현재 아놀드수목원의 원장인 윌리엄(네드) 프리드먼 박사는 한국의 원예 커뮤니티와 하버드대학교 아놀드수목원의 관계를 다시 활성화하고자 한다. 그는 서로 윈-윈 할 수 있는 관계를 원한다. 서로 지식의 보급을 촉진하고, 식물자원을 교환하며, 상호협력하고자 한다. 그는 전 세계가 기후변화의 위협 아래에 있음을 인식하고, 자연생태계를 이해하며, 자연생태계의 보존을 이끌어 내길 희망하고 있다. 프리드먼 박사는 2022년 9월 20일 하버드대학교 아놀드수목원에서 진행되었던 김성숙 뉴욕가드닝아카데미 대표와의 대화에서 그의 진심 어린 소망을 전했다.

김성숙 대표는 교육가, 가드너, 그리고 작가이다. 그녀는 대한민국 전라남도 농가에서 태어나 자랐고 국립순천대학교 조경학과를 졸업했다. 미국으로 건너가 미국 조경회사에서 근무했으며, 뉴욕식물원 전문가양성 원예학교를 졸업하고, 한국인 최초로 뉴욕식물원에서 프로 가드너로서 12년을 근무했다. 또한 뉴욕식물원에서 교육가로 활동했으며, 일반 대중을 대상으로 다수의 가드닝 수업을 실시했다.

김성숙 대표는 작년에 뉴욕식물원에서 독립하여 현재 ‘뉴욕 가드닝 아카데미’라는 온라인 가드닝교육 프로그램을 운영 중에 있으며, 한국인 제자들을 온라인으로 가르치고 있다. 또한 한국수목원식물원협회에서 재능기부 자원봉사의 일환으로 편집위원으로 활동 중이다. 그녀는 미국내 식물원과 수목원, 공공정원에서 일하는 인재들을 벤치마킹의 일환으로 인터뷰한 내용을 한국수목원식물원협회지에 꾸준히 기고해 오고 있다.

김성숙 대표는 미국 원예기관(식물원, 수목원, 공공정원)에서 배울 수 있는 몇 가지의 그들만의 방법들과 ‘전 세계는 함께 공생한다’라는 그들의 철학이, 한국 식물원 및 수목원의 성장과 발전에 크게 기여할 것이라 굳게 믿고 있다.

김성숙 대표는 오는 10월 28일 금요일, 천리포수목원에서 전 직원을 위한 초청강연과 워크숍을 진행하며, 프리드먼 박사와 이야기 나눈 사항에 대해 논의할 예정이다. 또한 다음날인 10월 29일 토요일, 천리포수목원에서 일반인(고등학생, 대학생, 주부, 회사원, 은퇴자 등)을 대상으로 ‘행복한 인생 설계, 나의 꿈 정원 만들기’라는 주제로 특강을 진행한다. 초보자들을 위한 코칭과 멘토링도 함께 진행할 예정이다.

The “Korean Wave” has washed upon many foreign shores, depositing Korea’s cultural products of music, film, art, food and fashion. The world has discovered Korea, and Korea’s influence on the consciousness of foreigners seems to grow every day.

But some discovered Korea and its unique place in the world long before the Hallyu phenomenon. Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum is one. Founded in 1872 as a repository for temperate woody plants, the Arboretum has focused on specimens from North America and East Asia.

 

As early as 1905, educator and Arnold Arboretum staff member John Jack visited Korea. Japanese forces restricted his movements to the Seoul and Pyongyang areas. His collection mission thwarted, Professor Jack turned his attention to the Korean people, and created a photographic record of great interest to ethnographic scholars.

Then, in 1917, Arnold Arboretum returned to Korea. Ernest Wilson, accompanied by his wife and daughter, first landed in Ulleungdo Island, and continued on to North Helan Province and the borderlands between Korea and China. He visited the Kongosan Mountains and took many photographs of the dramatic landscapes. He also went to Jeju Island and Jirisan. Wilson spent seven months in Korea, travelled some 10,000 miles, took 216 photographs, and collected plant material of every native tree and shrub which are now present in the collections of the Arnold Arboretum.The last major expedition, in 1977, found Arnold Arboretum’s Stephen Spongberg on a seed gathering expedition. Accompanied by Carl Ferris Miller, founder on Chollipo Arboretum, and Mr. Cho of the Forest Research Institute of the Korean Institute of Science and Technology, Spongberg’s adventures are documented in Arnoldia, the journal of the Arnold Arboretum. *

 

Presently, Dr. William (Ned) Friedman, the Director of Arnold Arboretum, is seeking to reinvigorate Harvard’s relationship with the horticultural community of Korea. He hopes to engage in programs that foster dissemination of knowledge, exchange plant materials, and increase cooperation, leading to a better understanding of the natural world and its preservation under the threat of climate change. Dr. Friedman communicated his desire to Songsuk Kim in an interview and conversation conducted at Arnold Arboretum on September 20, 2022.

Songsuk Kim is an educator, gardener, and writer, born into a farming family of Chonnam Province. She received her degree in Landscape Architecture from Suncheon National University and was the first Korean to have the position of Gardener at the New York Botanical Garden, where she worked for 12 years. She also taught several courses in their popular Continuing Education program.

She now has her own online educational program and volunteers for the Korean Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta. As a volunteer, Ms. Kim conducts interviews of staff at American botanical gardens and arboretums, and these are published in the Association's journal. She believes some of the methods and philosophies found in America’s horticultural institutions could be of use in improving Korean botanical gardens and build on their successes.

Ms. Kim will be giving a lecture at Chollipo Arboretum on October 28, where she will discuss her talks with Dr. Friedman and lead a workshop for the staff. The following day, she will be giving a class on the grounds of Chollipo, open to the public.
