울산의 남구를 관통하는 도심하천인 여천천이 자연형 하천으로 변신중이다. 여천천은 예로부터‘이수삼산(二水三山: 두개의 물줄기와 3개의 봉우리)’이라 하여 태화강과 더불어 울산의 자연경관을 대표하던 주요 하천으로, 원래 물이 맑고 깨끗하여 어린이들이 물장구를 치고 어른들은 투망을 던져 물고기를 잡던 아름다운 하천이었다.
그러나 1970년대부터 시작된 급격한 산업화와 도시화로 인해 하천 본래 기능을 상실한 채 하수구로 전락하여 그동안 주민들에게 철저하게 외면당하는 오염하천의 상징이 되었다.

죽음의 하천, 되살아나다
이에 울산시 남구에서는 여천천에 맑은 물을 공급하여 건천화 되어가는 하천환경을 개선하고 자연친화적인 생태하천으로 복원하고자 지난 2007년부터 270여억원의 사업비를 들여 ‘여천천 생태하천 복원사업’을 실시했다. 이번에 완공된 1단계 구간은 소정교에서 여천교에 이르는 길이 5.7㎞(폭 30~100m) 구간이다.
우선 여천천 오염의 가장 큰 원인인 부족한 하천유지수를 확보하기 위한 방안으로는 연구 용역 등 여러 검토과정 끝에 서울 청계천과 마찬가지로 다른 곳의 물을 끌어오는 것이 타당하다는 결론을 내렸다. 과거 여천천에 바닷물이 유입되었다는 것에 착안하여 태화강 하류 명촌대교 부근 기수지역에 취수펌프를 설치하고, 5㎞ 구간에 직경 800㎜의 송수관을 매설하여 하루 8만톤의 맑은 물(1~2급수)을 끌어왔다. 또한 하상에 퇴적된 오염물질을 준설하고 오수차집관로를 매설하였으며, 하천정화를 위해 자연석을 쌓아 저수호안을 설치하고 수변식물을 식재해 여천천에 새로운 생명을 불어넣었다. 더불어 호안을 따라 3.4㎞의 산책로와 자전거도로 등을 조성하고 군데군데 징검다리를 놓아 주민들에게 쾌적한 휴식공간이 됨은 물론 생동감이 넘치는 하천공간으로 탈바꿈시켰다.

Yeocheon Stream
Yeocheon stream, which passes right through the Nam-gu, Southern area of Ulsan, has revived like the Cheonggye stream in Seoul. Before the restoration, it had the poorest water quality recorded 6th grade which was impossible living things to live and was also treated like ‘the death stream’ with nasty smell and rotten water. During the construction for last 5 years, it is born again as ‘Natural ecology stream’rated the first water quality.

Yeocheon stream, which is 5.7km length, 30~100m width, is a river of downtown area and passes through from Shinjeong-dong to Samsan-dong in the Southern area of Ulsan. The Nam-gu office planned to improve the urban environment with 270 million Korean won budgets for making clean river. The 5 years flowed on the change into the first quality of clean river. The whole process for the restoration completed as digging bad soil in the ground and flowing 80,000 tons of clean water per day. Furthermore, Water supply pipe systems were constructed for the prevention of overflowing wastewater and waterside plants also were transplanted around Yeocheon stream.

With these landscape construction, there were newly constructed wall fountain, falling water fountain, musical fountain with square and water screen on the upper area.
Trails and bike roads which are 3.4km section were created for healthy environment. In the nearest future, 10 cafe pedestrian bridges will be constructed as the landmark of Ulsan.
