Wilmington Waterfront Park

로스앤젤레스항의 산업유휴지를 탈바꿈시킴으로써 탄생한 윌밍턴 워터프론트 파크를 통해 인근 지역 9개 블록이 새롭게 변모하게 되었으며, 30에이커에 달하는 현대적인 공공 공간이 마련되었다. 이는 윌밍턴과 주위의 수변 공간을 시각적으로 연계시킬 뿐만 아니라, 이 지역의 공간적 중심축이 되어 일상 속에서의 리듬을 자아내고 있다. 폭넓은 대중 참여 및 공공 봉사 프로그램을 바탕으로 건립된 윌밍턴 파크는 지역 경제 발전에 새로운 기운을 불어넣고, 생태 및 사회적 다양성을 촉진하는 데 있어서 견인차로서의 역할을 맡게 되었다.

디자인 의도
제한된 예산을 통해 최대한의 지속가능성을 확보하는 한편, 윌밍턴 지역에 훌륭한 공공 경관을 제공해 줄 유연한 장소를 창조해내는 것이었다.
항구가 공원에 영향을 미치는 것을 방지하기 위해 디자이너들은 강력한 조형적 지형을 만들어냈는데, 평면에 가깝던 기존 부지를 완만한 경사가 있는 잔디로 덮인 최대 높이 16피트의 지형으로 변모시켰다. 경관의 조형적 특성 덕분에 멋진 경치를 확보하게 되었으며, 일종의 해변 테라스를 조성하게 됨으로써 다양한 지형적 특성을 경험할 수 있는 기회가 마련되었다. 또한 다섯 군데의 놀이 공간이 하나로 연결되어 이른바 ‘그레이트 론(Great Lawn)’이라 불리는 대형 공공 공간을 확보하게 되었다. 공원 지형의 상층부에는 엘 파소 해변산책로(El Paso Promenade)가 조성돼 보행자들이 공원을 둘러볼 수 있도록 했다. 이곳에는 의자, 전시용 정원, 전망용 망원경, 그리고 자전거도로 등이 설치되어 있으며, 캘리포니아 해안 산책로(California Coastal Trail)와 연결된다. 한 개의 사장교와 빨간색으로 도장된 세 개의 보행자용 다리는 공원 지형과 절묘한 조화를 이루며 윌밍턴 지역의 랜드마크로 자리 잡게 되었으며, 엘 파소 산책로와 하층부의 통행로를 리듬감 있게 연결시켜준다. 나무들이 늘어선 산책로는 공원의 보행자 탐방로 네트워크를 확장시키며, 다양한 볼거리, 즐길거리를 제공한다. 명상과 사색에 잠길 수 있는 벤치, 어린이들을 위한 모험 놀이터, 모임과 공연이 이뤄지는 광장, 그리고 숲속의 피크닉 공간 등이 모두 산책로 주변에 위치하고 있다.

By transforming a Port of Los Angeles brownfield site, the Wilmington Waterfront
Park reclaims nine city blocks for the adjacent community, and provides a contemporary 30acre public open space that visually links Wilmington with its remnant waterfront, physically anchoring the neighborhood by creating a focal point for its daily rhythms. Built from an intensive public outreach process, the park has become a catalyst for reinvigorating local economic development and for promoting ecological and social diversity.

The design intent was to create a safe community recreation area, a flexible place for the community of Wilmington’s growth that embodies their concerns, engages the site’s unique industrial context, utilizes the best sustainable practices possible within a constrained budget, and provides a public landscape to an underserved community of Wilmington.
In order to protect the community park from the port’s impacts, the designers created a strong sculptural landform which transitions the existing planar grade of multi-purpose playfields into a gently sloping, shaded landscape of grass rising to a promontory 16 feet high. The sculptural quality of the landscape creates a sc enic backdrop while emulating the form of a coastal terrace selectively unfolding a topographically diverse terrain melding with a series of five informal playing fields aggregated to create a large civic space and festival ground referred to as the ‘Great Lawn’. Atop the landform, the El Paseo Promenade provides a primary component of the pedestrian circuit with seating, display gardens, observation binoculars, and a shared use pedestrian bicycle path extending the California Coastal Trail connecting to the park’s regional context. One cable-stay and three pedestrian bridges emblazoned with red punctuate the landform creating a unique landmark for Wilmington and rhythmically extending the El Paseo promontory over lower pedestrian pathways. Tree-lined promenades extend the park’s network of pedestrian circuits offering a variety of seating for respite, contemplation, and people watching including interactive water features, an adventure playground for children, plazas for gathering and performances, and picnicking within the tree groves.
