Seokpajeong and Seoul Museum

석파정은 흥선대원군의 별서로 이름 높은 곳이다. 이곳은 본래 조선 철종과 고종 때의 문신이며 영의정을 지낸 김흥근1796~1870의 별서였다. 석파정 초입의 큰 암반에 한수운렴암閑水雲簾庵, 물과 구름으로 발을 쳐서 한가한 시간을 보낸다이라는 글귀가 있어 김흥근 이전에도 별서공간이었을 것으로 추정된다. 『매천야록』에는 대원군이 이 별서를 탐내어 팔라고 했으나 김흥근이 듣지 않자, 아들 고종과 함께 이곳에서 하루를 묵은 뒤 별장을 차지했다고 나온다. ‘임금이 묵고 가신 곳에 신하가 살 수 없다.’는 것이 당시의 정서였기 때문이다.
이후 흥선대원군은 이곳의 이름을 석파정이라 바꾸고, 자신의 호도 석파로 정했다. 당시 석파정은 안태각安泰閣, 낙안당樂安堂 등 모두 8채의 집으로 크고 장중하게 구성되어 대원군의 위세를 과시했다. 대원군 사후 그의 후손들이 승계하여 소유하다가, 한국전쟁을 거치면서 성 콜롬비아병원결핵요양소으로 사용되기도 했다. 1960년대부터 1996년까지 소유가 자주 바뀌면서 오랫동안 관리 부실로 폐허나 다름없던 공간을 석파문화원이 2006년에 인수한 후 4년의 인허가와 설계, 2년간의 시공을 거쳐 2012년 서울미술관의 부속공간으로 거듭났다.
석파문화원은 유니온약품그룹 안병광 회장이 운영하는 문화재단이다. 안 회장은 평소 문화, 예술, 조경에 많은 관심을 가졌는데, 소중한 문화유산이 방치되어 폐허가 된 것에 안타까움을 느껴 인수한 후 미술관을 건립했다.

Seokpajeong is well-known as the Byeolseo(suburb villa) of Heungseon Daewongun(regent of King Gojong). It was originally a Byeolseo owned by Heing-geun Kim(1796-1870), a courtier and prime minister of the Joseon Dynasty in the period of King Cheoljong and King Gojong. A large rock carved with Chinese characters meaning “Spending leisure hours by drawing a curtain of water and cloud” located at the entrance suggests its long history as a Byeolseo. According to Maechonyarok(collection of Maecheon's works), Daewongun was very fond of this Byeolseo and asked Kim to sell this. When refused, he spent a night with his son King Gojong and took this Byeolseo. At that time, people thought that ‘a retainer cannot live where his king have slept.’
Heungseon Daewongun named this Seokpajeong and made his pen name Seokpa. Then, Seokpajong boasted its majestic composition of 8 houses including Antaegak and Nakandang. After the death of Heungseon Daewongun, his descendants inherited it, and was once used as Saint Columbia Hospital(sanatorium for tuberculosis). Frequent changes of owner during 1960 to 1996 caused poor maintenance. But four years of licensing procedure and design, and two years of construction since the acquisition by Seokpa Culture Center in 2006 made this an annex of the Seoul Museum.
Seokpa Culture Center is a cultural foundation owned by Byeong-gwang Ahn, the CEO of the Union Pharmacy Group. As an amateur of culture, art and landscape architect, he felt sorry for the ruined status of the cultural heritage, and took over it to make an art museum.
