북한강 지류며 놀라운 경관을 제공하는 청평호수를 내려다보며 하나님께서 만드신 창조물의 위대함과 아름다움을 마음껏 누릴 수 있는 곳에 연수원이 자리 잡고 있다. 주변 인접지에 배치되어 있는 기존 주택들과는 규모나 외장재 마감이 주는 감동이 남다른 것 같다.

하루 24시간 내내 다른 모습을 그리는 청평호수의 짙푸른 청록의 수면, 그리고 푸르다 못해 빛이 나는 중첩된 산의 숲들이 인간의 연약함과 겸손함을 깨우치게 한다. 연수원은 전정이 위치한 남동향에서는 3층이지만 북서향에서는 2층으로 지형의 고저차를 고려하여 디자인했고, 웅장하고 강력한 주변의 자연경관에 맞서는 조경이 아닌 그 경관을 끌어들이는 ‘비움의 조경’, 즉 차경을 통해 공간의 양과 음, 대와 소, 극대비의 조경기법을 사용하게 되었다. 우리 선조들이 마당을 비워 자연의 경관을 정원으로 삼은 것처럼, 또한 건축의 웅장함에 겸손한, 그런 조경을 하고 싶었다.

Looking down at the beauty of the river and the sparkling waters of the lake, the training institute is standing surrounded by the landscape impressive enough to remind us of how great God’s creation is. It is easily distinguished from the neighboring buildings in size and choice of claddings.

The lake, whose calm and clean waters create different impressions in every moment, and the forests on the mountains lead us to think of how humble and vulnerable we are. The training institute is 3 stories tall looking to the southeast while 2 stories tall facing the northwest. The building was designed to be naturally integrated into the surrounding landscape, rather than to be standing out against it. This method could be understood as the landscape architecture of emptiness, which focuses mainly on the vivid contrast between yin and yang, and big and small. It can be traced back to the early days of the Korean landscape architecture, where our ancestors created the front garden of the void to fully enjoy the surrounding natural environment as their private landscape. Following this tradition, I hoped to develop a landscape architecture of humble character.
