세계 조경의 달은 왜 4월인가

2008년 4월, IFLA 회원국들은 “세계 조경의 달”을 기념하여 각국에서 다양한 행사를 펼쳤다.

ASLA(미국조경가협회)는 캠페인을 통해 미국의 많은 고등학생들을 대상으로 조경가가 무엇을 하는지 소개하는 기회를 가졌다.
CSLA-AAPC(캐나다)는 제2회 포스터 공모전을 진행했고, NZILA(뉴질랜드)는 “최근 디자인 경향”을 주제로, NLA(노르웨이)는 “경관과 예술”을 주제로, APAP(포루투갈)는 “녹지공간의 관리”를 주제로 세미나를 개최했다.
또한 ILI(아일랜드)의 현대 조경 전시회, SAPM(멕시코)의 조경주간 행사, CAAP(아르헨티나)의 학생워크샵, 기념식재 및 출판물 간행 등등 각국에서 매우 풍부한 행사들이 열려, 전지구적 차원에서 조경직의 중요성과 전문성을 알리고 향상시키는데 크게 기여하는 계기가 되었다.

4월 26일, 프레드릭 로 옴스테드의 탄생일
4월은 조경분야에게 특별한 달이다. 뉴욕 센트럴파크를 조성하기도 했고, 미국에서 조경가라는 직업을 처음 만들어내어 전세계 조경가들로 부터 조경의 아버지로 불리고 있는, 프레드릭 로 옴스테드(Frederick Law Olmsted)의 생일이 바로 4월 26일이다.
ASLA에서는 프레드릭 로 옴스테드의 탄생일과 지구의 날(4월 22일)이 있는 4월을 조경의 달로 지정하였으며, 이것이 현재 “세계 조경의 달”로 이어지게 되었다.

IFLA, 각국 행사 계획 알려주세요
2009년, 다시 4월은 다가오고 있다. IFLA에서는 각 회원국들이 어떠한 계획들을 가지고 있는지 알려주길 바라고 있다. 세계 각국의 행사들은 “세계 조경의 달 행사 일정표”로 IFLA 홈페이지를 통해 제공된다.

WORLD LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE MONTH

In April 2008, the International Federation of Landscape Architects(IFLA) member

associations around the world answered with enthusiasm the call to plan an event on the occasion of the World Landscape Architecture Month. Events from ASLA’s(USA) campaign encouraging its members to introduce their career to high school students,

the CSLA-AAPC(Canada) and its second-year poster competition, NZILA’s(New Zealand) conference on emerging modes of design practice, a conference on Landscape and Art organized by the NLA(Norway), management on green spaces conference in Portugal(APAP), an exhibition of contemporary landscape architecture in Ireland(ILI) to the week of Landscape Architecture in Mexico(SAPM), a student workshop, a commemorative plantation, the launching of a publication in Argentina(CAAP) and a cinematographic cycle on Landscape Architecture in Uruguay(AUDADP) to mention some which were recorded by several media. All these events contributed to promote the profession around the world.

The month of April is special for the profession as it encompasses the birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of Central Park, New York and founder of the

American landscape architecture profession on April 26; Earth Day on April 22, and the International Day for Monuments and Sites on 18 April.

And again, for April 2009, IFLA calls on every association to advise of their plans for this celebration.

An international calendar of Landscape Architecture events will be drawn up and posted to IFLA’s website.
